interior - Interior Minister orders closure of Paris mosque

(20 Oct 2020) France's interior minister has ordered the closure of a mosque in a northeastern Parisian suburb just a few days after the beheading of a French teacher in another suburb.  \r
Speaking on France's TF1 network on Monday evening, Gerald Darmanin said the mosque in Pantin had relayed a message that consisted of saying the teacher must be intimidated.\r
The mosque is due to close on Wednesday night for a period of six months according to the prefect's decree posted outside the mosque.\r
It already appeared closed Tuesday morning. One worshipper outside the mosque on Tuesday said she supported the imam saying he was a kind man and did not inspire hateful things.\r
Another said she thought the mosque's closure was a shame although she condemned what happened to Samuel Paty.\r
Paty was beheaded on Friday by an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee, who was later shot dead by police. Police officials said Paty had discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class, leading to threats.\r
16 people remain in custody as part of the investigation into the attack, according to police.\r
